Server downtime and a small upgrade

  • 10,566

Recently, X-istence determined that the hard disks on the OSNN server were failing and this was confirmed yesterday by The Planet, our hosts for the last 6 years.

We planned some downtime for this weekend, which would have involved downloading the entire contents of the server, starting afresh and reuploading all the data - but after some thought we have decided that it will be easier, more sensible and cheaper (!) to upgrade our 5 year old dual Xeon setup to something a little more cutting edge.

Over this weekend we will be moving from our dual Xeon, 1gig memory, dual 120GB IDE server running 32bit FreeBSD 6.2 to our shiny new 8 core (quad with HT) Xeon 3450, 4gig memory, dual 250GB SATA server running 64bit FreeBSD 8.1.

We are very excited to move to such a server, but it will take some time to setup, test and then ofcourse the site will be disabled while we move the files, database and updated various services. We want this work to all be done during the weekend and this server will cease to exist completely by the end of the month.

Goodbye defiant.osnn.net - hello iguana.osnn.net, this thread will be kept up to date with the latest developements.

Alien Swarm - Free Steam game

Today, Valve software will release a free game on Steam (also free) that has me a little excited to play for reasons that I can't completely explain!

Alien Swarm is a game and Source SDK release from a group of talented designers at Valve who were hired from the Mod community.

Available free of charge, the game thrusts players into an epic bug hunt featuring a unique blend of co-op play and squad-level tactics. With your friends, form a squad of four distinct IAF Marine classes. Plan your attack using an unlockable arsenal of weapons with countless loadout configurations against a wide variety of aliens. Blaze your way through an overrun, off-world colony, eradicating the alien infestation in environments ranging from the icy planet's surface, to a subterranean lava-flooded mining facility.

Along with the game get the complete code base for Alien Swarm that features updates to the Source engine as well as the SDK. Alien Swarm adds 3rd person camera, depth of field, improved dynamic shadows and a wide variety of gameplay additions to the Source engine.

  • Tactical, 4 player co-op action game with a top-down perspective
  • Complete game code and mod tools
  • Unlock persistent items by gaining levels
  • Over 40 weapons and equipment with countless loadout configurations
  • 4 unique classes and 8 unique characters
  • Matchmaking, Steam Cloud, Steam Stats
  • 64 achievements
  • Tile-based map generation tool
  • Powered by Source and Steam

Certainly looks very entertaining and frantic and did I mention it was free? Although it uses the Half-life 2 engine which has seen many Mac incarnations released, it doesn't seem to be available on that platform at launch.

Ivy Worldwide SMB purchasing survey

Nick from Ivy Worldwide let me know that in addition to the impending competition here on OSNN, Ivy are also giving away another PC and more to lucky people who undertake a new survey focused at small businesses.

We’re embarking on a project to more formally substantiate the proportion of our influencer partners’ readership involved in small/medium-sized businesses. Specifically, we have reason to believe that SMB owners/decision-makers act much more like consumers in their choice of the online information resources that subsequently affect their purchasing decisions. Further, we want to expose important new insights into how SMBs’ habits differ from those of general consumers, defining and understanding them better. The expected outcome is to help ourselves, our clients and you create more effective marketing campaigns targeted at SMBs, and also to boost your value as a blogger by providing evidence of your influence on this critical segment.

Why are we undertaking this survey? One, because the SMB segment is an integral part of the global economy, as per recent US Census data demonstrating that new and young firms (i.e., SMBs to a large extent) are the primary source of new jobs, and so consequently there’s tremendous value in understanding how they operate; two, to dispel misconceptions about and simultaneously define new insights into SMB decision-makers’ purchasing habits; three, to confidently substantiate such conclusions with statistically significant data; and four, to help you and site owners like you demonstrate the impact and value of your brand.

To that end, we’ve devised a 15-question survey that we’re launching today to gather enough data to arrive at useful and informative conclusions regarding SMB purchasing habits. To drive response rates, we’re offering to randomly award prizes to respondents once the survey period is completed, likely end of July or once we’ve received a minimum of 400 complete responses (this allows for statistical significance of the data). All respondents fully completing the survey with useful answers (i.e., one cannot simply enter nonsense into the text areas) and providing a valid email address will be eligible for a prize. We’ll select winners at random and contact them directly once selected, and then inform participating site owners of their names so you can announce them to the world.

The prizes are:
1. Grand prize: One Lenovo A70z all-in-one PC
2. Second prize: Five prize packages, each containing one of each of the following three devices:
o One LG Bluetooth headset (HBM-210)
o One LG Bluetooth stereo headset (HBS-250)
o One LG Bluetooth Solar Car Kit & Emergency Charger (HFB-500)

To reiterate, the criteria for eligibility for the prize drawing are:
• Complete the full survey (the revenues question (or any other) can be skipped if too sensitive, although we’d of course prefer all questions be answered)
• Supply valid information in the free-text areas (i.e., no nonsensical answers)
• Supply a valid email address

Email addresses will only be used to contact eligible winners and WILL NOT be retained once prize selection has occurred. We WILL NOT share contact data or otherwise contact any respondent.

Good luck :)

You can find the survey here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SMB_purchase_decision-making - please note that if you are interested in winning the above that you will need to both complete the survey correctly and do so by the end of the week.

Windows Live Wave 4 beta released

After weeks or months of teasing, Microsoft have finally made a beta version of the new Windows Live suite available for download and testing.

I grabbed the english web installer version and without any kind of options it has installed the following seperately:
  • Windows Live Essentials Beta
  • Bing Bar
  • Microsoft Default Manager
  • Windows Live Sync ActiveX Control for Remote Connection
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition [Enu]
  • Windows Live Provider ofr Microsoft Outlook Social Connector
I took the liberty of removing all existing Windows Live applications beforehand, so I don't know how well it deals with upgrades and rebooted after installation.

Opera Mobile 10 released

While I have never been a fan of their desktop browser, for Windows Mobile, I simply don't think there is anything better. A non-beta version has just been released and if you have a supported mobile I fully recommend that you upgrade or install.

Experience the Web on your mobile phone like you never thought possible. A clean, simple and elegant user experience is available for you, no matter what phone you have.

Opera provides a brand-new look and feel in a class of its own with smooth animations and visually appealing graphics. The Opera rendering engine displays complete Web pages, just like on your computer, and is fully standards-compliant.

Switching between open Web pages is a snap with tabs, and Speed Dial launches your favorite Web sites with a single click.

Opera’s well-designed user interface has you navigating gracefully and efficiently on both touchscreen and keypad devices. The browser comfortably adjusts to your needs by switching between portrait and landscape mode and also lets you adjust the font size for easier reading.

Perris and I have been using these beta versions for quite some time and having spent some time away with no alternative desktop to use I found I was able to fully enjoy the web from my mobile. No videos or pictures can really do justice to how great this runs on my HD2.
