AMD Catalyst 9.7 Drivers Released

  • 3,193
  • 1
AMD have released this months version of their Catalyst drivers for Windows Vista and Windows 7, the WindowsXP version is expected tomorrow.

How is this for fanfare? ATI Catalyst 9.7 – AMD’s first official unified Windows7 / Windows Vista Microsoft WHQL certified graphics driver for the Windows 7 RTM. I just hope they work with Windows 7 properly unlike the 9.6 drivers which gave me all kinds of issues!

ATI Catalyst 9.7 delivers a superior Windows 7 experience:
- Great gaming performance – superior performance compared to Windows Vista for single
GPU configurations and ATI CrossFireX™ configurations
- Stability – through AMD’s WHQL certified, unified Windows 7 / Windows Vista graphics
driver
- Leadership in Innovation – support for all the Windows 7 WDDM 1.1 features and AMD
ATI Catalyst features on the ATI Radeon HD 4000 Series, ATI Radeon HD 3000 Series, and ATI Radeon HD 2000 Series of products

Notice the last point about which cards are supported under Windows 7! Although Windows 7 does come with built in drivers that will allow you to use older products, but its worth checking with the release candidates or the upgrade checker.

Catalyst 9.7 also comes with a brand new Control Center and Display Manager and the usual host of fixes for various operating systems.

Windows 7 Released to Manufacturing

Brandon LeBlanc has announce that Windows 7 has officially been released to manufacturing and now preparations can begin for its official release in October.

I am pleased to announce that Windows 7 has RTM’d!

As I mentioned previously, RTM officially happens only after sign-off occurs. What happens is a build gets designated as a RTM contender after going through significant testing and meeting our quality bar for RTM. Then, it goes though all the validation checks required for RTM including having all languages of that build completed. If all the validation checks have passed – sign-off for RTM can occur. Today after all the validation checks were met, we signed off and declared build 7600 as RTM.

Not only is RTM an important milestone for us – it’s also an important milestone for our partners. Today’s release is the result of hard work and collaboration with our partners in the industry to make Windows 7 a success. We delivered Windows 7 with a predictable feature set on a predictable timetable that allowed OEMs to focus on value and differentiation for their customers.

Our customers told us what they want (and expect) and we defined those specific experiences and then built features to support them (like HomeGroup and the Windows Taskbar enhancements). Our customers also told us that “fundamentals” on both the hardware and software side was extremely important. Windows 7 today runs great on the broadest array of hardware types ranging from netbooks to high-end gaming machines. We worked closely with OEMs so that their PCs delight customers with the new features in Windows 7.

OEMs will recieve copies very soon and MSDN/Technet users will have access to the operating system starting August 6th. For more information on the various dates check out the blog below.

New OSNN theme / site launched

For the last few days and at various times during the last few weeks, months and years I have been working on a new version of OSNN and today I think it has reached the stage where it is ready to replace the old system.

We have been using Virtuanews since around 2002, but the project is pretty much dead which could well have opened it up to security issues and such, but in a shallower and yet more important sense was leaving it behind in the direction the web is moving.

Today we switch to vBadvanced, a system that is more tightly integrated with vBulletin which we have been using on the forums for nearly 8 years, this allows us to more easily keep the style up to date, moderate new posts in a single area. There is so much more as well, but I am pretty hyped up at the moment as I was really looking forward to getting this online.

There is of course, still work to be done and I have a todo list that just seems to keep getting longer as I spot things that need work! The most obvious is the lack of logo! But yes, its coming!

Thanks to the team and the elite members for helping me test the site out and please enjoy the new OSNN as it continues to evolve, let me know what bugs you find and what you think of it!

Xbox LIVE Update Preview Program

Major Nelson has updated his blog to announce that the Xbox Live Update Preview Program will be launching soon and you can sign up to try to grab a spot over on Windows Connect.

I am happy to announce that we’re doing an Xbox 360 System Update Preview program for our next release, and the opportunity to sign up is now available. Much like we did last year, you’ll need to visit the Microsoft Connect site from this link and sign in with your Windows LIVE ID that is connected to your Xbox LIVE Gamertag.

Once you do that, you need to fill out the "Xbox LIVE Update Preview Sign Up" survey in order to be considered for receiving the Preview System Update. We're asking a few questions about where you live, your home network, ISP connection and a few other pieces of information. We are looking for a good cross-section of our members in order to get the best feedback we can.

The Xbox team will then review all of the applications and if you’re selected we’ll send you an email notifying you of your acceptance in the program. A couple of points before you head off to register:

  • We’re looking for multiple thousands of participants, so your chances of making it in are good
  • This opportunity is open to all Xbox LIVE Members in regions where Xbox LIVE is available.
  • Just completing the survey does not automatically get you access to the Preview Program. We’ll be making final selections from the completed surveys and send you an email if you are selected.
  • While both Xbox LIVE Gold and Silver members can sign up, Priority will be given to Gold members in the selection process.
If you are accepted, you'll hear from us in about a week. Make sure your information on Connect is updated so we can email you if you are accepted. Also, I’ll be sure to updated/edit if the program fills up.

The update won't quite be as large as the one last year, but does bring enchancements to watching movies, getting games on demand and customising your avatar. There are many other minor enchancements as well so it will be well worth having once it is available.
