Re: New vista install, big hdd partition/formatting probs

I just got my invi, too. Is there a way to install Vista from the ISO or extracted files ? I dont have access to a DVD burner right now.

Re: Get a Vista Tech Beta Nomination!

Probably a stupid question ...

What I downloaded says it's 3G yet when I open the .rar file the only thing in there is a README.TXT ... Am I missing something here? :s

It's actually an ISO, not a RAR file, but it can open up in WinRAR. :)
The ISO is in the UDF format, so you won't see the files in WinRAR. What you now need to do is use something like Nero (the "Burn Image" option) or ISORecorder to burn the contents of the ISO to a DVD.

You can mount the image using Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120% and start the installer from within your existing OS. When it reboots the first time, it has all the files it needs to complete setup. I've done it once before to install Vista on a separate partition.

Sweet. I've been in the beta since July last year, and I still haven't had a chance to use true Glass (other than on the demo machines at WinHEC, PDC etc.)! I check my mailbox everyday but that gift card still hasn't come in yet. I want that additional hard disk for my desktop now, damn it. :D

Doh! Thanks NetRyder.

One more question. I've never run 2 OS' on the same box. I've partitioned my drive and want Vista on that other partition, how do I install on that partition and not my main one?

Once you burn the DVD, just boot with it like you normally do when installing XP, and during setup, you'll be asked to select a location to install Vista to. Make sure you select the new empty partition, and that should do it. Vista auto-detects your XP installation and adds it to the bootloader, so you'll get a menu each time you boot asking you which OS you want to load.

That would probably mean losing my current OS. will take a backup and try, thanks for the info though :)

Not necessarily. If you have an empty partition or an extra drive to install Vista on, you can keep both XP and Vista. When you mount the ISO and run the installer, it'll reboot and ask you where you want to install Vista sometime during setup. Just select the empty partition or extra drive, and it'll preserve your existing XP setup.

Of course, you should always have a backup ready in any case. :)

Man, I JUST installed 5308 x64 last night. I guess I will have to do it ALL over again.

(no complaints here!)

Will this upgrade smoothly if I am going from 5308 x64 to 5342 x64?

Upgrades are not supported between builds. It'll need to be a clean install.

Thanks. Guess the DVD didn't copy properly. When I boot up the DVD drive just kinda clicks. Don't think it's the DVD drive as it's brand new. I'll have to try to burn another one *shrug*

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
