Change XP Product Key

Last I checked there is only a beta version of the service pack. When DO people started trying to install the beta version it wouldn't let them (popped up a little box saying some yada yada). Anyways...to get by it all you can use your "educational" key that you churned out and then reformat/reinstall xp and use one of the new keys you have and then everything should be fine.

Worked for me....I iinstalled SP1 with no problems and I can still use Windows Update.......

of course...this is all on my laptop that I am using for testing....I don't use it for much else.(read earlier posts)

Now let me get this straight. After others have said you can just change the key on the DO version from the popular one to one the keygen created and SP1 will install, you're saying you must also reformat?

Well i have a problem. my PID is 555274-640-000035623xxx (no i'm NOT using Devils Own Corp).

i did use the FCKGW cd-key (i uhh, lost my key =) )does this mean i cant use SP1 when it comes out?

btw, FCKGW is not unique to devils own corp, it is the universal CD-KEY for Windows XP Corp (i have friends that code for microsoft)

**EDIT: maby "universal" wasnt the correct word. what i ment to say was it worked in all Windows XP Corp versions (pirated and legit). Basicly meaning if your using the FCKGW-*** cdkey that doesnt mean you are using a pirated version of XP.

it is the universal CD-KEY for Windows XP Corp
No it's one of many cd-keys for Windows XP Corp... you're friend is not only a thief, but he has a hard time telling the truth too. :p

Yeah... you're burned as far as the new service pack is concerned.

Ok, this is what I would do. If you have DO or a "friendly" version of Corp. I would make sure to run that little piece of "educational" software and get a long list. Print out the list.....reformat and reinstall with a new key.

It takes me about an hour to format, reinstall XP, and get my programs all back up so it isn't that big of a deal. I recommend getting Norton's Ghost or some equiv. and as soon as you get into XP install/run ghost and back up your XP install......(makes it easier in the future)......then I don't believe you will have any other worries.......

All I know is I installed DO, used the new key, installed software, updated to SP1beta and I can use WindowsUpdate with no problems........

I think Microsoft should have taken the opportunity to get those running the DO version to actually purchase a legal copy of Windows XP. Microsoft should have got in and explained that now is the time for those "evaluating" the software to actually purchase it. Left alone, people will always find a way around it but if Microsoft got in first they could have made some more sales.

I'm sure if they reduced the price a bit or even if they offered a home-license edition for three or four computers then they would have sold many more copies.

Patrick

Home license.....hhmm that is actually a pretty good idea. I wonder how many people would actually pay for that? I probably would considering I have three other computers running versions of Win2k (2 pro, 1 server.....all of them I purchased)....hhhmmmm

HaxCode, why are you saying to reformat? I don't see why that would be necessary. I've read of no one else having to do that...
If I had to go through reformatting again, I'd just do without SP1 instead.

You have DevilsOwn XP and did not use the FCKGW key? (you used a key you generated yourself), and the product ID is NOT 555274-640-000035623xxx ???

If so this would be GREAT news for me.. i have this product ID and i'm scared i might get disabled when SP1 comes out (or if i use the beta). I used the "educational software" and found a CD-Key that should work for me (non FCKGW). i just dont want to re-format unless the PID changes..

How about a bit a sanity to this thread.

1. the official SP1 has not been released so NOBODY can tell you what it does or does not do.

2. Why not wait until it is released, then those that have pirated copies will know what they have to do.

I make this comment, MS were advised that the ONLY way to have a secure system with integrity was to keep a data base of ALL issued keys, this MS elected not to do for one reason or another, their problem now is that some intelligent individuals can generate keys as used by MS - heck one popular key generator is reported to have come from MS....

So MS's problem is to isolate or differentiate between a legit key and a legit key but not by MS!

So my advise is not to loose sleep over it wait and see what happens, the SP! is not that great a deal anyway.

Have a nice day.

Okay just so everyone knows, Changing your CD-Key (using the guide), WILL give you a brand new Product ID :)

I used the educational software to gain a working CD-Key (i may have gotten permission from Microsoft to do this) and entered it using the guide. My PID is now very far from the one generated to users that use the FCKGW cd-key (ie, owners of pirated versions of XP).

Works like a charm, and now I dont have to worry about SP1 harming me in any way. (not that i'm doing anything illegal :) )

I was just saying that as a cure-all-you-don't-have-to-worry-about-anything method. I figured beginning anew with a new cdkey from the very beginning of installation would make sure that there was nothing else that could be done to discover if it was indeed an original DO copy......just some extra precaution...as Shawn319 points out it changes the PID when you change the key while in XP so I woldn't think there would be much else to worry about.......it was just my humble opinion....

Wait... let me get this right.

In the case that you lose your CDKey, this guide will not assist you in retrieving this CDKey. It changes the existing CDKey to another CDKey which you have.

Waddy argues that this is done merely in the case that you lose your CDKey. But will Win XP Pro Corp stop operating because u don't know your CDKey? You already entered your CDKey on install. And if you have another CDKey then you don't need to worry about changing the existing key until your next format. If you lost your CDKey the first time i think that you will be cautious enough to keep your "second legit CDKey" in a safe place until you need to format.

Now let me get this straight. Someone give me a real life situation in where you are required to change CDKey AFTER you have succesfully installed it.

The only reason to change your existing WORKING CDKey is that you want to install SP1 with a pirated WinXP. Stop being hypocritical about your anti-piracy policy.

Here's my real life situation: I have WinXP Corp, lost my legitimate CD-Key at the wrong time (middle of a format), called up a friend who gave me the FCKGW key and it worked! Only problem is i have the same Product ID as everyone using Devils Own Corp (pirated) and Service Pack 1 MAY OR MAY NOT disable my computer and/or windows update (bad).

I would rather use a generated CD-key than this FCKGW one.

(timewarp, 6 months later.. OHHHH THERE'S that stupid piece of paper with my legit CD-Key, i better go change it using that wonderfull guide so i wont be using the generated key anymore)..

Here is an example for you.

My company subscribe to MSDN Universal which means we pay microsoft s**t loads of money for all business products.

I got my hands on the devils own and installed it at work. Why? Because I was licensed to use Windows XP and Microsoft hadn't shipped me the CD's.

I left it using that key because as far as my company was concerned the EULA says I was entitled to use XP whether it had a crappy key or not.

My point being, if it hadn't been for someone telling me how to change the key, I would have to reformat a load of machines.

An alien from planet zarcoth came down in a beam of light and gave it to me =P

Being the big company that you are, you guys never heard of Norton Ghost???

Anything on these computers that are important? Warn the staff prior to the ghost and that any information is to be moved to the server or backed up according to the companies policy.

It takes 30 minutes to do 40 computers at my old high school and this was 2 years ago. Your EULA tells you that you are allowed to use any old copy of WinXP? I highly doubt this. The MSDN folder is rather prompt on arrival. It comes to our business via Courier from the local Microsoft branch.

As for the person who says that they "lost" the key while they were mid way through formatting. The CDKey is actually situated on the inside cover of our MSDN folder along with all the software inside the folder. The CDKey is furthur reprinted on the slip which holds the CD. Which company did you ring to get this key for XP Pro Corp? Corporate... its just that... for CORPORATIONS. If you want the features of Corp then go get Pro.

mmmmm

everyone seems to have an opinion on this to each his or her own just to say that product id is now 55274-649-3581434-xxxxx

after using the educational tools and changing my key without formatting I used the floppies and repaired my xp used new key and dont see any problems with sp1 will get that when it is out

Please Laugh!

Hey, Whats up?

I goto Mulgrave School in Vancouver BC Canada. (www.mulgrave.com) (Sh!tty site).

Anyways i am the resident techie there (17yrs old) and i was given a copy of XP PRO. (Legit) I have since discovered that my school is indeed using Devils Own Cdkey. :p  I need to change my Key. I am currently testing this software, in case we deploy it next year (sept) on all our 500 computers. I must reafirm that this is not to be used for any illegle purposes. I simply want to install Servise Pack 1 for XP. As i am currently testing this software for my school i sort of need to find out what service pack 1 solves and any other issues it creates.

PS I know look at my specs (oh god its a desktop!) Ya it is but i also have an IBM A22m for school use. (XP thing is for IBM) ( I have a completely Legit XP PRO on my desktop!)

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HELP ME!!!!
