this is the flow of graphics modes to select...

openGL absoutely anytime you CAN do it. if it is available....
direct3D absoutely anytime your openGL does not work....
software NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER... coz its shyte

unless you have a 2-8meg card and slow computer...

if you have an even reomtely decent card you can play CS in opengl or direct3d mode... if the fps drops just reduce the res... even 800x600 is good

Thats not a bad score for a beginner, tho I might have been going easy on you... and at the end where I was just playing shoot out and diving for cover... that was fun...

I once beat both my housemates 50- >10 now my old housemate Ed is almost as good as me
