Hello fellow gurus.

Two of the sites I visit most often now seem to take five minutes or more to load, or do not load at all.
Problem started about three days ago. Nothing on the PC side has changed, except for a couple of MS critial updates.

Here is the situation:

Cable internet access.
Time Warner Roadrunner.
Two computers on a wireless network.
Both computers are wireless.
The desktop can load pages without any problems.
The laptop has problems loading Yahoo, ebay, and possibly others that I'm not aware of yet.
The problem exists regardless of the browser I'm using. Tested with Opera, Firefox, and IE7 Beta 2.
I have run a virus scan.
Hijackthis reports nothing unusual.
Spybot, Adaware, cwshredder, etc... report a clean system.
I have flushed the DNS.
I have run Ccleaner.

I can ping Yahoo.
I cannot ping ebay.

Here are the traceroutes:

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I read through that thread, but I haven't tried the fix yet.

Is it common for an ISP to suddenly change MTU settings for no reason? I have been with Time Warner for years and never had a problem. Also, I would assume that my desktop would also have issues if Time Warner changed MTU settings, but I don't know a lot about the nitty gritty of networking.

I'm thinking the MTU problem, maybe? You can check that with your ISP and the tool to fix it is on this thread

you're right - if it were a problem I'd have expected it to be one from the get go... or if (like me recently) you did a reformat and forgot to apply the MTU fix :dead:

Ouch... one of those "Oh [favorite expletive]!" moments, eh? :nervous:

Well... I'm not sure why I suddenly had trouble accessing the handful of sites listed above,
but I ran the TCP Optimizer tonight and now I can access the sites again. Weird, weird, weird...

I had two 21" CRT monitors blow up at work today, so maybe it's
just sun spots.

Thanks for your replies.

Sun spots were a few weeks ago.

Yeah... t'was just a joke.

Update: Fix seems to have been temporary, I'm back to not being able to load yahoo.com, myspace.com, ebay.com, and possibly other sites. Very frustrating.

ebay hangs on "include.ebaystatic.com"
yahoo hangs on "us.js2.yimg.com"
myspace hangs on "x.myspace.com"

Any other ideas?

Well.... ebay, yahoo, and myspace are working now for whatever reason, but once site still refuses to load.
www.athenet.net. This was my dialup internet provider and I still have my email through them.

I cannot access their webpage, or their mail server (via Outlook Express) when I'm connected
wirelessly. If I connect my laptop to the LAN port on my router, I can connect to their website.

I've messed around with MTU settings, but they really don't seem to have any effect on the page loads in my case.

Updated my router(Linksys WRT54GX) to the latest firmware, but no joy.

Here is the traceroute I'm seeing to www.athenet.net while connected wirelessly:

Help! I need my email! :)

:) Problem solved!!! And not a moment too soon, as I was running out of hair to pull out of my head.

Still not sure why it happend... Possibly a conflict with a recent MS critical update. I had my router set up with WPA2/AES which had worked fine for months. Tonight I switched it to WPA2/TKIP and all of the sites and my POP mail now load perfectly. I'm not happy about having to go back to TKIP, but...

I'm sending Linksys a report on the issue.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?

Impressed you have kept this alive this long EP! So many sites have come and gone. :(

Just did some crude math and I apparently joined almost 18yrs ago, how is that possible???
