Think up an application and go from there - need not be anything complex, maybe a guest book or something? There is no substitute for learning by experience, IMHO. Usually it is not hard to come up with something you may want to do.... and then if you break it down and work through it you'll probably find you can google answers to queries as you go...
If you host your work - remember you'll probably need to turn PHP errors on serverside too...
