Is My system good enough?

I must be doing something wrong, been using HDs for 19 years now and the only one that ever died on me was a seagate. All the rest were WD. LOL. Have 5 in use now and 3 friends using my old ones.

Maybe they just don't like you...

I like what you did for suggestions, but if you read one of my earlier posts you will see that i wanted the p4 3.2ghz with hyperthreading and an ati graphics card, i just know and trust those, and plus the monitor is key for me and mouse and keyboard as well. Because i am thinking that the dell might be a better idea, because i get everything, and then i can run halo right away which is my main goal, and then i can get the better ram and graphics card later.
I am normally not really the person to cheap out on things, but i am very strapped for cash at college right now, so unless you guys can come up with a very solid system that wont be wasting money (i know the dell is kinda wasting money since i will have to upgrade, but it will serve its purpose for now) i might have to get the dell, its just too good of deal. SO try and come up with something with the p4 processor please. thanks guys you are being a big help right now.

ps the setup you had before did not have ddr2 ram in it, which i really want, and the motherboard required it.

pss. I could probably get windows through school, so if you could just get a monitor in there instead of the the os

i think thats where i am leaning, but i am waiting for lancer to come up with his system that is under $1000 and is good. If he doesnt reply soon then i will have to just go for the dell. But i guess i have a couple of days or maybe even a week or two, not sure yet

Oops. Sorry, must have skimmed that one. Then the 3.2ghz P4 would be either $215, or $239 depending on what socket you wanted. If you went with your own build and the Socket 775, then a nice board would be this one: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-130-461&depa=0
But you could go with something cheaper and be perfectly fine. I have a Soltek SL-865Pro-775 board and I like it. It can be complicating at times with setting up stuff, but it's EXTREMELY stable. I have a P4 3.4ghz HT 550 processor in it.

On a side note, I have an Intel D915PBL board sitting around here. Never been used, still in retail box with everything. It's got PCI-E, DDR2, Gigalan, Onboard sound, Really nice board too. I just wanted to keep my Radeon 9800 Pro All In Wonder so I went with the Soltek board which has AGP instead of PCI-E

and where on newegg can i get a socket 775 p4 that i wanted for that price i cant seem to find it. I like that board and that processor idea though. what about other parts?

The first price I listed, I think $215 was not a socket 775, it was the 478 socket. Wasn't sure which socket you wanted.

ok for $1060, nut no monitor, this is what you get.

sockets are one thing that i dont know about, so if you could advise me that would be good. I was thinking 775 because that board that you posted looked nice. What is the difference between the two processors that you posted?

couple of things, where did you look for all of these, i would rather have an ati videocard and i would prefer a WD hard drive, and plus the monitor is very key, because that puts everything up to around $1300 which is what i estimated, which is too much. so i dont know.

the 775 is supposedly create for graphic intensive apps like desktop publishing, creating movies and games. The other is more for commercial apps like office, cad etc...

I think thats correct, anyone need to correct me, but as i say murlo, that is one awesome setup, as you can see i justy built myself a new system, personally, i'd go witht he AMD 64 cpu, but you seemed insistant on the p4.

The amd is cheaper and faster, but the p4 some would argue is more stable.

ok thats all the shopping i'm doing today for you, go to

www.tigerdirect.com, they're pretty cheap and have a ton in stock, personnally my fav online retailer. do as you like, but if your so concerned with a monitor waste your money on a dell. they can be had for nickels, not really a concern when your building a top spec machine.

$189.99 In Stock

Yeah, either the X600Pro/XT or the X700Pro would be nice. If you go $99.99 for the WD SATA you should just put in the extra $2 for a refurbed SATA WD 250GB from newegg. I just did that this past week and I love the thing.

If you want to save costs now and then upgrade video cards in a couple years look at the 9800 PRO. It's getting old but still runs most games ok at med-high resolution. If you go with htat MB in lancers post you are locked into higher priced PIC express video which is no faster than AGP right now.

You can get the "genuine" ATI for $205 or the sapphire branded exact same board for $189 at newegg.

If you hadn't guessed yet, spending other peoples money is a popular pass time around here. ;)

And BTW. Tigerdirect is not considered one of the more reputable mail order houses. Watch out for restocked items and crappy power supplies.

I think he had mentioned he wanted PCI-E video and not AGP. Otherwise I would have suggested the 9800Pro to cut costs. But considering the 6600GT and the X600Pro are either the same price if not less then the 9800Pro, they are a much better value because they are better cards overall.

Yeah, caught that after I posted. i missed soemthing. When did he go from $700 with LCD monitor to over $1000 without a monitor. I blinked.

And I don't see a keyboard, mouse and speakers in that $1060 price or an OS for that matter. That's another $150 plus an LCD monitor for $300.

That's a total of $1500 before shipping and tax (if any).

Getting very pricey now. I bet that old system is looking better now. :)

Intel P4 540J 3.2E GHz LGA775 1MB 800 FSB (HT) - $231

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-130-461&depa=0
(This is a nice board and has some pretty nice reviews from sites, but you could go with one of the lesser model MSI boards that support both DDR and DDR2 so that way, you could save money on both the board and if you went with DDR ram now instead of DDR2 and waited for the price to come down for future upgrades)

ANTEC Black Performance Series II SOHO File Server Tower ATX Case with 400W Power Supply -$102

NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive, Black - $59.99

(This is a very nice drive, NEC's are topping the charts)

SAPPHIRE ATI Radeon X700 PRO Video Card, 128MB GDDR3 - $166
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-443&depa=1
(I went with the Blue OEM card because I like the color, the retail red card is a $1 cheaper, and the OEM red is $4 cheaper)

Microsoft Windows XP HOME Edition With Service Pack 2 -OEM - $92.95

Dell UltraSharp 1704FPV 17-inch Flat Panel LCD - $314
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...ry_id=210&first=true&page=productlisting.aspx
(I like this monitor because for the price it's very nice. High contrast and good response time.)

So for a computer that is better then the one on Dell.com, you can build your own with quality parts.
Fully Upgradeable for: $1204.93

Now, like I said, you could go with a lesser board, save about $50, and maybe some more on ram. The video card you could save about $20 going with an X600XT. The HD you could maybe find an SATA 80GB WD somewhere for less, because there were none left on the refurb newegg area when I did this.

I saw the post about tiger direct and that scared me a little but on the site they said that they dont sell any used processors only new, but give me insight please. And here is what i have for my comp...

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
