Derek's Upgrade Thread

Bah, stupid responsibilities.

Jan-June are going to be very expensive for me. At least for now, this won't happen :(

Decided to budget out before making the plunge, good thing I did

That sucks.

Think of it this way though...... By the time you get the money to build a new computer it will probably bigger, badder, better, and faster than existing computers that are less than a year old (like mine).

OK So I have decided to do this again :D

Pulling the trigger on most parts tomorrow likely, just need to settle on a Case and a Sound Card - then check to make sure I have everything picked out. Was rather tipsy when choosing parts last night, saved them as favorites on my laptop

Want a second monitor as well, probably a 2007wfp

Also may get a new printer. Have already picked up a new router, added a N.A.S. too ;)

The 2007WFP is a beautiful monitor, I just can't wait until I receive my 2407WFP ;)

Which router did you buy? I am starting to hate this Cisco router.

Agreed, can't wait to have a second one :)

I got the Linksys RVS4000 - a little pricey but AMAZING features IMO.

Need to decide on a Case and a Video card. I also want to look into some tidy cable management. I think I need a sound card too...

Parts so far (not yet final either)

QTY x 2 in RAID 0

No need for Window Model, supposed to make more noise and I won't see it with a closed case anyways :)

Opticals:

Two of those, both qualify for rebates me thinks

More to come...

Just need to pick a video card, some cable management stuff, and perhaps make sure I have enough fans for my casing.

Off to scour the adds for a nice All-In-One

-edit-

This is probably my video card -

A little pricey? I paid over $325.00 for my Cisco router and the GUI interface sucks; some of which doesn't even function correctly. That's not to mention the confusion behind some of the features and that the wireless portion is completely seperate from the rest and doesn't function because of bad JavaScript elements.

I really love it, if you have any questions about it let me know :)

Any suggestions on my Video Card, or Case? Can't seem to make myself happy in either area. Sound card recommendations also welcome.

Going to wait on the All-In-One, not as much of a rush versus other components. I'll take my time to research on that one.

This case makes me want to wet my pants btw :D

I wouldn't buy a non-DX10 card at this point. Go for the 8800 or wait for something else.

I agree, but I don't game - at all.

I can't stomach paying that much for a video card, as technically I won't benefit from all the advantages DX10 provides over DX9.

That being said, I'm still considering it. Getting married in roughly 5 months and house by end of year, the time to spend is now. I want to spend now, so that my PC will be good to go for at least two years (pending I can hold off wrt will power :p)

Does that router allow you to setup port forwarding?

e.g. Forward port 80 (for OWA), 443 (for OWA), and 25 (for SMTP) to 10.10.10.4 (my Exchange server)

How well does it (the router itself) work?

Yes it does allow port forwarding, and so far (used about 2 weeks), it works great.

Only bummer IMO is that most changes require reboots which take about 60 seconds. Other than that, it's flawless. Linksys has Firmware and IPS (Internet Protection System) updates as well - very cool.

Just to follow up, it actually has really great control with port forwarding. There is one whole screen (page) dedicated to specific ports, and then another for port ranges. Very neato IMO.

Then again, I've been stuck with the WRT54G for a long time, huge difference.

If you want screenies let me know :)

I didn't phrase it correctly. I need NAT, 1-to-1 forwarding. I have five IP addresses and will not be using the same IP for the router and mail.* address.

kcnychief,

If you'd like to save some money on the case, take a look at this Cooler Master for $9.99 + shipping - after rebate. (Have to order today - Jan. 8, 2007 though.)

What's the reason for buying such expensive optical drives? Are they really that much better than drives that cost less than half as much? If they are I need to make a change in my plans.... I'm in the market for a new DVD drive and have been considering this one: http://clubit.com:80/product_detail.cfm?itemno=CA1547045

Amazing value. I have confirmed that there is a motherboard tray, I'm all over it - can't be beat for that price AR IMO.

Thanks man :) - rep+++

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
