TOKYO - Apple Computer Inc. is supporting the Blu-ray format for next-generation DVDs, giving it a boost over a rival format known as HD-DVD in the competition over setting a new standard for recording high-definition video and other digital information.

Both technologies promise more storage capacity and enhanced video quality over current DVDs, including the ability to record high-definition video. Both can be used to store movies, games, photos and other digital information.

Apple, which makes Macintosh (news - web sites) computers and iPod portable music players, will become a member of the board of directors of the Blu-ray Disc Association, the consortium that supports and promotes the Blu-ray format, it said in a statement.

Other members of the Blu-ray alliance include Japanese electronics makers Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news) (news - web sites). and Matsu****a Electric Industrial Co., Dell Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and The Walt Disney Co.

The rival HD-DVD format is backed by Japan's Toshiba Corp., NEC Corp. and others.

Backers of Blu-ray say it is superior because it has a higher storage capacity, while supporters of HD-DVD say it is more compatible with current DVD technology and is less costly to make.

The winner of the standards battle stands to gain from patent royalties.

Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., recently introduced high-definition editing capability in its iMovie HD software.

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs (news - web sites) said consumers who are already creating their own high-definition content want to be able to record it on high-definition DVDs.

"Apple is pleased to join the Blu-ray Disc Association board as part of our efforts to drive consumer adoption of HD," Jobs said in a statement.

I wonder if this will improve the chances that either format will become standard.

I hope to god there's a single standard. It's annoying as hell for the consumer when companies try and proclaim that their product is better than the competing one, obviously in a market such as cell phones, mp3 players and the like it's fine, but when it comes to movie/music/data formats, it's just annoying :D

*Does the blu-ray dance*

Hopefully.

It offers more capacity (A lot more) than HD-DVD, and the major flaw which was the lack of support for video compression MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC has been overcome making it in no way inferior to HD-DVD.

Other than higher production costs (let's face it, superior products cost more to make) for Blu-Ray, I can see no reason at all for anyone to back HD-DVD.

i dont know why we cant just go back to Betamax :p

p.s. i dont care which one "wins" as long as i can use it without breaking the bank ten-fold :)

Yep. The writable DVD situations sucked, and still does if you ask me. It's really gonna suck if there isn't any standardization.

lol for some reason i confused blu-ray for ray-ban those shades and stuff lol nothing to do with what we're talking here

its because of me, that you are confused hehe

As with most things it will probably depend on who the porn industry goes with. They set VHS and DVD as the standard.

It is annoying, but I've currently got no problem with it, most the devices I own will support both + and -, however I only ever buy - discs and they work with everything I own, as they do with the devices my friends and family own. Only device I've found that doesn't like - is the PS2, but I'm not going to go buy a bulk of + discs just to watch movies/etc on a Ps2, that's why we have a DVD player :D

What? Porn comes in .avi format... everyone knows that... :p

It would be useless to put porn on blue ray cause they are so short and crappy. Anyway...yeah blue ray is gonna kick arse!

It's got nothing to do with the length, it's the encoding. You could fit extremely high quality movies onto a single BD. I can't wait for it, because current DVD's are just crap, superbit's an improvement, but could be better.

Not to mention that most of the writable DVD drives can't even write discs that work in most DVD players, it seems.
