Windows Vista Beta 1 announced!

Hey guys, for an Athlon 64 User, shall i go ahead and install the 64-bit version? or shall i just stick to the 32-bit version?

Alot of users who could use 64bit are sticking to 32bit for now as development drivers are appearing faster.

I will hopefully switch to the 64bit version for the second beta.

I'm currently willing to eliminate my build of XP 32-bit and replace it with the 64-bit version in addition to the 32-bit version of Vista Beta 1.
I hope i won't get kicked in the a** for letting my good old XP down.

Just make sure you can find x64 drivers for all your hardware and you should be fine.

I think i can find 64-bit drivers for everything except my damn eIcon ADSL modem, which is the reason why i wanna keep at least one 32-bit OS.

Can't you connect the ADSL modem to your ethernet port? Or is it one of those USB-only ones?

yup, it's one of those silly USB ones, i won't mind changing it if it didn't work, any recommendations?

Hmm...any ADSL modem with an RJ-45 ethernet connector would work. Don't really have any recommendations. I just use the one supplied by my ISP.

Hey.

After my post a week or so ago re; DWM and a custom Resolution (widescreen etc) I had an E-mail from a chap regarding his GeForce Fx Go 5200.

I read your post where you mentionned that you use the LDDM drivers from NVIDIA for your FX Go 5200. I have a Go 5200 as well and it does not recognize the card. It is also not listed as a supported card on NVIDIA's web site. Did you change something in the INF other than the resolution list? Are you sure you don't have a regular FX 5200 card?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Here was my reply if anyone else had any problems, thought it might be usefull;

Hi,

I'm assuming you mean you read my post on OSNN.net?

Firstly Extract the Contents of your Drivers to somewhere like C:\Nvidia\Drivers.

If i remember correctly all i did was update the driver manually via Right Clicking My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager and then Double Clicking Display Adapters > Right Click your Video Card then Update Driver...

- A Window will come up asking weather it should search for updates via the Web, say no.
- Then choose Install from list or Specific Location and click Next.
- Then check Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install and click Next.
- In this window, click on Have Disk.
- Now locate where you extracted your Nvidia Drivers [C:\Nvidia\Drivers] and find your (modified) INF file. When i say Modified, i mean where you have added your extra lines of text regarding your resolution etc...
- Now all you have to do is select Geforce FX 5200 [it won't say Go but that doesn't matter]
- There will be a warning that tells you this is the incorrect driver etc etc, ignore this and install.

That is what i did and it worked perfectly, mail me back with any results if you could. If you didn't understand this then let me know.

Loaderbull.

ps, yes mine is a GeForce Fx 5200 Go. My laptop Manufacturer hasn't released an updated driver for my Card since the end of 2003! So i just update and install the drivers from http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_77.77.html. It always tells me it can't find my card, but i just update manually through Device Manager. Hope this helps.

Not to slam the site, which is normally excellent and on-point, but I was really disappointed by Neowin's Review on the Instalation of Vista. I know it may be limited since the software is in Beta and there isn't much to it, but the article just left me wanting more. If the Installation is so bland, why not pair something else with it?

yeah, I actually fell asleep during the install and when I woke up it was installed.
har-

lol...

It's not like you missed anything. Although the article says the install is easier for most users now, it's also boring. Like within XP it tells you new features compared to earlier versions, which I think would be a good thing to add to Vista. Educate users on IE7, UAP, WinFS, etc.

Windows Vista Beta 1 SDK Goes Live...

As Microsoft's 2005 Professional Developers Conference draws ever closer, the company has put the finishing touches on its first Windows Vista Software Development Kit, which is now available on MSDN. The SDK includes documentation, samples, header files, and tools for developing on Windows Vista Beta 1.
"For the first time, the SDK provides support for using both managed WinFX and unmanaged Win32 Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)," Microsoft says. The kit will simply be dubbed "Windows SDK" upon release, as it includes both WinFX and Vista-specific documentation.

If only the installation would of included some commercials about some of the possible side effects caused by installation and running of Vista beta 1 such as, "video and sound card issues, antivirus issues, and occasional BSOD with other incompatible software". You know like the viagra commerials, "high blood pressure, headache, Diarrhea, blindness". Then maybe an additional review would of been worthy of something better then a nice nap! instead the nap is just about perfect during installation of 5112 :)

is anyone sure if when vista comes out they will use amd's as primary motherboards and processors for the brand computers?

That decision would be left to individual system vendors like Dell, HP, Toshiba, Sony etc. The OS itself isn't optimized for one particular brand over the other. :)
