xp task manager too much!

i just checked to see how many and what kind of apps were
running in the background and found 30! i don't know what 95%
of them even doing, much less which ones i can safely shut down!
is there so guide or something i can use to help me close some these things out

Yes, there are guides for shutting down unneccesary services<(keyword). Look for them in the XP Tweaks section.
