I tried installing the game Mafia

and got an error saying I needed a current Indeo codec from this site.

http://indeo.ligos.com.

and they say they want $14.95 them

With the September 2002 update to Windows XP (known as Service Pack 1), Microsoft is no longer distributing any version of the Indeo codecs with its operating system. This only affects users with new PCs that are shipping with Windows XP Service Pack 1, or clean installs of Windows XP SP1 on an older system. Installation upgrades of SP1 and the use of Windows Update does not remove existing Indeo codecs from your system.
I managed to get round it by doing a repair install with the original XP CD then upgrading to SP1

its a bit of dirty trick if you ask me
all that hard work making a slipstreamed XP-SP1 CD for nothing

GGGRRRRR !!!!!!!

I downloaded (free) the win 98/Me/2k package and they run perfect with Windows XP...

They probably put: "It is not certified for operation under Windows XP" just to trick you and pay for it.

I needed the package for both "Mafia" and "Cossacks". And both of them worked perfect after I installed the Indeo package.
