Windows xp freezes in installation

My Windows xp installation freezes when it reeches the "installing netwok" point. The computer is not dead but the installation stops there. And it really is dead, I have tried to wait for 5 hours - no reaction.

I am doing a clean install from boot cd
I have tried to remove all hardware, even tried to switch my graphic adapter.
I disabled onboard virus detection

My specs

Asus A7V133 -c Motherboard
Athlon XP 1700+

Please HELP!

I believe there's a point in setup that you can choose what network drivers/devices to install. Make sure you don't have a modem or NIC installed (if onboard, disable), then go in when it asks for workgroup name, etc. and remove all networking stuff so it's not trying to install them. After installation completes (hopefully) you should be able to add your hardware devices, networking clients, protocols, etc.

Do you even get to the point where it asks about setting up your network?

Check and make sure you NIC is properly seated. If you are using any usb connections, do as Lonman suggests and make sure nothing is plugged in.

I have tried

I have tried to unplug everything. It doesn't seem to work

I had a similar problem. But what I got was a request from the installer for a file on the installation disk. However, the CD drive was inaccessible. So I had to copy the i386 folder in the XP installation CD to a second hard drive.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
