News Windows 8 Pro costs $40 if you're running XP, Vista, or 7

Microsoft has announced aggressive upgrade pricing for its upcoming Windows 8 operating system: anyone running a copy of Windows from the last decade can upgrade for $40, making this potentially the cheapest Windows ever.

The upgrade is a bit of a Hail Mary move: selling the OS is a profitable business, but it's possible that at the familar $100-$200 price, uptake of the risky new OS might be less than enthusiastic and the next phase of Microsoft's business may not take off. After all, many businesses and individuals just recently updated to Windows 7, and many are still running the venerable XP. The cost of upgrading again could be a significant deterrent. If Microsoft can't capture a big audience for Windows 8, its whole strategy for the next few years falls apart.

But if Microsoft offers this one-time "pardon" to its many legacy users, it could spur the kind of sales it needs to make Windows 8 the most popular OS they support, albeit at the cost of many millions of dollars. Notably, this is the "Pro" version, not the cheaper "RT" version that is aimed strictly at tablets.

Probably doing it, as they know its going to stink like Vista did

I thought I had read not to long ago that they were allowing people to upgrade ONLY from Windows 7. I guess they must have looked at the numbers and saw more XP then 7 users.

I still say you should never upgrade a Windows OS. That is a pretty good deal though. Although I can get OSX Lion for $30.00 and it is the full version.

You don't have to upgrade it to use the upgrade installation disk. There was an old, old trick, from a long time back where you essentially format the drive, pop in the instillation disk, and begin running it. Now it checks the HD for a qualifying install, but won't find it (recent format), but it wouldn't just error out. Instead it asks where the qualifying version of Windows is installed. Just pop the old installation disk into the drive, point it to the drive and say that Windows is installed on the old CD (though my win 3.1 media was on floppy disks, now DVD is more like it), it scans it, sees the setup program, and moves on to install the OS onto the HD.

It was about the only way to get win95 upgrade to install without having it crap all over due to an old win3.1 install. I thought everyone was aware of that lil work around by now....

As to Windows 8, putting a desktop back might be an improvement, but taking the start menu out, I dunno. Some changes to the desktop they've suggested aren't entirely to my liking. I really don't care for too much clutter (aka all the icons) on my desktop. It means everything is too messy and disorganized for my taste.... Clutter isn't necessarily one's friend here....

If the October windows 8 release build is anything like windows 8 enterprise then they have scored big because im running win 8 enterprise and having no problems at all with steam, EA's origin .. And internet explorer 10 is now running Battlefield's Battle log .. I predict it will be a big hit on privacy but gotta roll with the changes rapidly approaching your reality:devious: Becase soon their will be no choice in the matter

The Metro and removal of the start button will make it a failure. There is too much of a learning curve for the computer illiterate, and most people don't like a change that drastic. I look for them to remove Metro and put the start button back in with Windows 9 ...

All they did with Windows 8 was take Windows Mobile and put it on the desktop. You won't find too many touch screen home computers.

I have to agree with you on that one.

I will probably get it so I can integrate my WP better, but I know a lot of people that just took the jump from Windows XP to 7 and took a while getting used to it, I don't see them ever turning out for Windows 8... Plus, I don't know anyone with a touchscreen PC, as you stated.
