To answer your second question, if it doesn't, take a look at one of the VNC flavors...RealVNC, TightVNC, UltraVNC (this is what I use).
I actually prefer using VNC to Remote Desktop, but you should use both and see what you feel more comfortable with.
(If I recall...) Remote Desktop is a Windows XP feature. The closest feature of Windows 2000 is terminal services, which, as the name suggests, is a remote Terminal, no GUI (Great for using B!tchX at college.. wouldn't encourage that though ;P)
VNC's definitely your best bet for remotely using your machine.
