what version of direct x should i get

i have 8.0 but is there a version just for xp or do i install the direct version for 2000

XP has latest version (8.1) Direct x8.1 is available for 98/ME/W2K Windows versions.

No point touching DirectX9 at all yet, the version that comes with XP is fine.. also the recent release of DirectX 8.1b shouldn't really be bothered with.

I agree, you should stay away from the beta versions. 8.1 is good enough.
