certain programs I start and certain webpages I visit will launch the installer for MS Office. Any idea what is going on here?

I only comment to inform you - you are not alone. I have had it a few times yet have absolutely no idea what causes it ?
I bunged the disk in and it cures it - If memory serves I have had this glitch about 3 times in 6 months. No pattern at all

I have a pattern, I think. Some websites start it, and a global audio control program I have also starts it. Very interesting.
