Using jpg or gif as background

For some reason I can no longer use jpg or gif files as my background image. When I select one in the desktop menu, it doesn't even appear in the preview. I can't find a place to select to use 'active desktop'.

Can somone direct me where I might find that, so I can use jpg or gif files again?

Also I have no "Appearance and Themes" option in my control panel . . . should I have that?

if so, why is mine gone?

1st problem, just open them in mspaint, and save as *.bmp

2nd, I don't have that either

you can change that if you want. in the control panel, just switch it to classic view. i believe that will fix it.
