Besides saz and myself, not sure how many others are interested in Dragonball here, but guess I'll pass the info along, in case someone is interested.
For some time, the first 53 episodes of DBZ had been edited only, an uncut (albeit still different from the Japanese original) version existing for the latter episodes. Course with the Japanese originals on the same DVD, one could see both...
Anyhow, there was prior news that FUNImation would go back and re-release the first 53 episodes in an uncut format, when the contract for DVD sales with Pioneer had expired. Till then, their contract forbade them from releasing it themself, and Pioneer wasn't interested in releasing an unedited version...
Anyhow, a few months ago, the uncut (and largely uncensored) version of the first episodes began to come out. These look closer to the Japanese originals then their older uncut version (ep 53 or was it 54+?)... The ep numbers also seem to follow the same ep numbering of the original series (where for instance the first 2 Japanese eps weren't edited into 1). 3 DVDs (9 eps) have come out. It is labeled a bit different though "aka the Vegeta saga, rather then the Saiyan saga 1"
BTW, Cartoon Network has started showing this new uncut version as well, at 11:30 pm MST, Monday through Thursday... They're ahead of the DVD release on their showing...
The first movie was also re-released, with mention to removed scenes having been included in the same sort of uncut version, which the beginning of DBZ is being re-released with...
Otherwise, they finished the Cell Games saga, and have started releasing the Great Saiyaman saga, somewhat alternately with releases of the uncut beginning of the series...
