That is the question... recently I have noticed a lot of threads closed due to questionable violation of the guideline rules. Some have been closed even though, at least as far as I see, there has been a topic, not in violation, being discussed. I know I neither own this site, run this site, or even moderate anything on here. But why are so many topics being closed that dot seem to violate any rules. It just seems to be a case IMO of a moderator flexing their muscles. I am sure this will be closed also. I just think that moderator's power is not absolute. I mean I though we all should have a say in the forums here. Maybe I am wrong but I dont think some of the things that go on here are either harmful to 13 year olds. I guess you cant debate topics anymore or you'll be shut down.

There have been various things taken out of threads that have violated the forum guidelines. Obviously you cant see these, but if a thread is consistently causing problems then it will be closed.

I wouldn't close this thread as it really would be an abuse of power if no one could criticize :)

Becareful of your replies.. Big Brother is watching and he/she is pissed

Hang on, your'e calling for the closure of word association, I find that somewhat hypocritical :(

I dunno bout a lot of threads closed for questionable reasons actually...

there are sections that are in blatant violation which are later removed and it does appear after that little cleansing that the thread is innocent enough...

howver I have seen certain users continually post the same kind of stuff even though they have been repeatedly warned NOT to do it... and then the thread is closed..

the forum guidelines are there for all to see.. I don't moderate here and I know that it doesnt seem fair all the time.. but the freedom of speech issue is not really valid when there are posted rules...

its like parking rules... no one likes em but they are enforced for a reason...

flame wars don't do any good... neither do constant threads on which is better... ati/nvidia or amd/intel... those threads never end and are NOT about constructive criticism...

pk.. I agree sometimes there may seem to be an abuse of power but the mods here are actually a lot fairer than most I have seen on other sites...

again... if one does not read the rules and is in violation... claiming freedom of speech is NOT a good reason...

New forum guildlines are being worked on even as we speak, a lot of forum members have complained about some of the pics and sigs that have semi nude women in them (or some where they are clearly nekkid). This is supposed to be a tech support site, not a porn site. My kids have walked into my office when I have been cleaning up a thread that contained porn pics in it, and personally I found that to be in bad taste. Whether or not you agree that a 13 year old child should be able to see that, doesn't matter, it goes against the forum guildlines.

This site was made to help with tech support, and to welcome everybody, some of the jokes are clearly racist, bigoted, sexist, etc. How can you welcome somebody on one hand, then on the next allow jokes that attack them on the other? The one question I would have to anybody who posts a joke, how would the person or persons the joke is about feel about the joke? Would they be offended, or would they laugh with it? Some jokes are clearly made to be offensive. I have and will continue to watch jokes closely. Jokes that are racist, bigoted, sexist, or attack others sexual practices I will take out. They may be funny to some of you, but they aren't funny for the ones the joke is about. And once again I go back to the saying this forum was created to help everybody with tech support, and to make them feel welcome.

I wouldn't close this thread as well, however, other mods might, and I wouldn't have a problem with that either.

[PK], Khayman and all other members who disagree with the closing of 'Who da _____ is' thread:

We are in the process of rewriting the guidelines to make them as clear as possible, so every member understands what can and cannot be said or posted.
Although as the guidelines stand right now, Moderators have the right to close a thread as they see fit, without explaination. No this isn't a power trip and I did not take it upon myself to randomly close the above mentioned thread, I asked beforehand.

well actually I didn't read the other thread by khayman on closing the word assosciation thread..

I am not going to second guess what goes on over here... mainly a lot of newer people come here for tech support... thats why I came here in the first place... but this is a community...

I didn't know that the name that babe thread was closed or that word-assosciation was perhaps going to be closed..

of course there have been blatantly NUDE women posted in name that babe... just as there have been certain words posted in word assosciation...

on the whole part.. its not right to close a thread if there are no complaints about it or if it is not in violation... but I must admit name that babe did have nekid wimen in it on more than one occassion..

that might be the reason the thread was closed..

I wish we had some way of objecting to a closure, in a constructive way. I dont agree with some of the closures and would like a way to debate it openly. I just do not want a forum where if a moderator dosent like something no one can contest it. Now clear violations are a different. I have seen blatant violations and whole heartedly agree with the decisions made. I dont want an omnipitant moderator.

but I must admit name that babe did have nekid wimen in it on more than one occassion

I think u are wrong there. i have been following that thread since the beginning, and i dont recall ONE naked pic there..

I followed it at the start too... for a long time... and far as I recall there were a couple... nothing pornographic.. nothing that I would complain about... but certainly I can see some people having issues...

btw... IMO I thought name that babe was a fun thread.. I dont have problems with nudity/language so on so forth.. but then I don't make the rules and I have to abide by those that are in place

I usually don't close threads, 98% I just delete the offending post in the thread, but if flaming and the same kind of offending posts are posted then it has to be closed.

Anytime I delete a questionable post, it's not an easy decision, I do take some time, and most of the time consult with other mods, as do most of the other mods.

on the who's the honey thread I recieved numerous complaints about it, I posted something in the secret mod forum, other mods agreed the practice of posting semi nude women was getting out of hand. Jewelzz consulted with Electronic Punk and the rest of us mods, and a decision was reached to not allow those kinds of posts anymore, because of the complaints, not because she was on some "power trip".

Personally I enjoy looking at pics of semi nude women, however, they don't belong here in this tech support forum. I would hate to lose members who are just offended by the pics, this is a great tech support site, lets keep it that way.

Ppl have been saying this is a tech site... sure there are threads dealing with Technical related issues but this is more than that. I thought that if a person wanted a tech only site then maybe that person should go to M$'s web site and deal in there forums. I dont have a problem w/ rules but when you are changing those rules I think its only fair to let ppl know first not just claim the thread violates policy. Why cant we see the rules first. I have always tried to adhere to the rules.

I deleted a few naked pics in the there, yesterday there was a Playboy Centerfold pic in there, if that ain't nakid I don't know what is.

This is useless, only puppy dogs will be allowed, oh wait they are nakkid too, NO PUPPY DOGS ALLOWED :D

[PK]: You're right, I should have waited until the updated guidelines were posted before closing that thread, the thread is closed and I can't changed that decision. I won't apologize for closing it but I will apologize for closing it before the guidelines were updated. For those who felt I over stepped the boundries and closed the thread prior to the updated guidelines, I aplogize.

Wow, Thank you Jewelzz I do appreciate the apology. I usually get a shut up you bald lamer or something like that. :D

I just wonder what has been violated. I understand that nude ppl are not allowed I m not arguing that. But according to the guidelines the thread did not violate those rules even the new ones??

Forum Guidelines 8/8/02
Pornographic Images – Any photographic containing nude or semi nude images will be deleted. First offense will bring a warning to the member; second offense will result in banning of that member.

I had no problem with the closure of the Name the Babe, thread. I mean yes semi nekkid babes was fine as far as I was concerned, though (truthfully) I found the process of guessing the name of the person, testing my minds recall stimulating. Same thing goes with the Word Association, I found it interesting from a psychological point of view (I am not a shrink) to see which words people linked in their minds. From that I can conclude that a lot of the people here need a mental housekeeper to clean them up but it was also stimulating to see how it worked. That is all I can think of.

This is not a rant.
