Ok. Here is my query.

Is there a legal copy of OS 10.4 to download (including a developer edition)?

I suspect the answer will be "No" since I've searched the Apple site and not been able to find anything.

I also suspect hints may well be made to various "less legit' " download sites, don't think I've not checked there too

If you head onto the Apple Developer Connection web-site and login with your normal Apple Logon, you can purchase a copy of Tiger. That's the only way (other than being a developer) you can obtain a copy from Apple.

I'm not sure, however, if the version listed there is the one I already have (developer preview) or the final version. I have a copy of the developer preview DVD running on a machine I have here. It's pretty stable and looks nice.

The version obtainable from ADC is a developer preview, although it is not the same as the version released from WWDC. You can also get free releases from Apple of the latest builds but only if you are a registered developer.

Good call, current beta's aren't worth running as a main o/s just yet anyway. Well, in my opinion that is, other's seem happy to do so

What is a normal apple logon? I never registered on the apple site.

Register then, and that will be your logon.
