Scan & Defrag
You should try to run scan disk first, before defraging. If you defrag your drive and you have any bad sectors, these will remain bad, and you won't be able to fix them. I would suggest disabling any running programs, turn off any screen savers or anything else which requires to use the drive you are trying to scan. Checking out the virtual memory, and possibly allocating some more would help as well.
