Can someone tell me how to remap alt gr to Alt?

Look either side of your space bar.

Sorry. forgot, not all countries are cursed with this one.

In UK and some other places, the right hand alt key is Alt Gr, which is essentially useful for typing some foreign characters that I never use. It doesn't work as a normal Alt key.

Rip out your right alt key and you get the same effect, fairly annoying.

So I'm looking for the simplest way to remap it (preferably without having some remapping program having to run constantly in the background).
