Hi there could somebody please explain ram timings for me.
I bought expensive OCZ PC3500 ram and my friend has crucial PC2700 he beat me in pc mark, he does have 1 gig of ram where i only have have 512 but surely my ram should have still been faster?

Here are my current timings reported by CPU-Z
What do they mean and what can i optimise them to?

Memory type DDR-SDRAM
Manufacturer (ID) OCZ (7F7F7F7FB0000000)
Size 256 MBytes
Max bandwidth PC3500 (217 MHz)
Part number OCZ433512ELDC-K
Frequency (MHz) 200.5MHZ
CAS# 2.0
RAS# to CAS# delay 3
RAS# Precharge 3
TRAS# 7
FSB : DRAM 1:1

Thanks :)

did he beat you in pcmark score or in the pcmark memory score?

also if your memory is running @ 200mhz it is running @ pc 3200 speeds... not 3500...

Is this the RAM you bought: http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/reviews/memory/OCZ_PC3500_Basic_Series_1.html

If so then they should be running at 400mhz. The site states "This memory is rated to run at 433 MHz DDR using 2.5-3-3 2T timings and uses 5ns chips"

You made need to go in to your bios and change these.

Check a thread i started along these lines here: http://www.ntfs.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1702

Did you buy your memory in a 'matched pair'?

Also, what mobo you got? Does it support Dual DDR? Does it even support 400mhz RAM (if that's what yours should be)?

well if its the frequency that is displayed stock it is about 212 odd mhz (x2 for ddr) which is why I am assuming the settings in bios are locking it @ 200mhz oe so

Part number OCZ433512ELDC-K....

just doing a search on the part number came up with this... http://legitreviews.dealtime.com/xPF-OCZ_512_MB_DDR_SDRAM_20709032

"512 MB DDR SDRAM (OCZ433512ELDCK) 433 Mhz Bus Clock Rate Random Access Memory

OCZ Enhanced Latency PC-3500 Dual Channel optimized kits memory using state of the art ULN technology are capable of achieving outrageous speeds of up to 434 MHz at CL2*. In addition we have optimized the design to take advantage of the increased bandwidth of Dual Channel DDR platforms. Each module is hand tested and matched across a variety of motherboards to insure flawless performance on any motherboard. Our copper heat spreaders maximize cooling and extend your rams life while increasing performance. OCZ Enhanced Latency PC-3500 is the best performing DDR memory on the market"

My motherboard is in my sig
Which is an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
The ram is a matched pair it was bought from this site origionally http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_OCZ_144.html
and they say its this ram http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/OCZ_PC-3500_ECC_Registered_Dual_Channel_DDR
That was what i was told when i bought the ram (was an ebay jobby) Though i have found nothing to dislodge that claim.
What should i be looking to set things at then ??
(oh thanks for the help so far ;) :) )

Had a quick look into it...so your mobo is an nForce 2 eh? Good good.

On the mobo do you have different coloured RAM slots..purple and green? Two of one colour and one of the other? If so then to get the RAM working in Dual mode you have to have a stick in each colour.

When you've done that i would use http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php to ID your memory timings and post some shots (like mine below) for us to have a look at. It'll also give you more specific info on exactly what RAM you have there.

ok here is a screeny of what you just asked for teddy.
(nice to know my memory is matched :) )

If this is your mobo:

Then it does support Dual DDR. The memory banks dont seem particularly purple do they!...soooooo, you need to put one stick i the very bottom slot (as per the pic) and another in one of the top two (as apposed to putting them both closest to each other in the top two slots). Have you done this already?

Looking at the screeny you posted to be honest i cant see much wrong. :(

Using AIDA32 have you tried the benchmark>Memory Read option....should be up above 3000mb/s. Check that.

You may also wanna check your BIOS version, updates are found here i believe: http://www.asus.com/support/download/download.aspx

I have the same mobo with a pair of 2700 sticks (mushkin level 2 (2-2-2)) just used clock gen and upped my fsb/memory from 200 to 210 and my memory read bandwidth went from 2630 to 3036..

memory read result was 2774
memory write was 1100

It is set for dual channel and during post it reports it is running in dual channel mode.
i just wanted to know what settings to have the ram on :-/

2-3-3-7 - which is what you have them on....which is why i was looking in to it more.

Just a side question, what do you use to change the timming of your RAM? Can you change RAM timing on any RAM?

settings in bios... AUTO is what it is usually set @...

you can change pretty much any of your timings that you choose to do so... cas latency is reasonably important but the others (percharge et al) also matter...

the trick is not only about speed but also stability...

depends on your motherboard maveric169 . Mine you can adjust them in the bios or with some programs like the one for nforce motherboards you can adjust them there

hummm, ok, well I don't think my mobo supports that then, mine is a Gigabyte GA-7VKML and I can't change anything related to my mem in the bios. :(

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?

Impressed you have kept this alive this long EP! So many sites have come and gone. :(

Just did some crude math and I apparently joined almost 18yrs ago, how is that possible???
