M stands for Mobile and is developed for laptops. In performance tests between equally clocked p4 and p4m's you see that the p4 is slightly better. Also in price the P4 is cheaper than the mobile one, that's because the chip has to be smaller of course. In battery lifetime you'll see that the Mobile uses less power than the P4 and thus a higher battery performance.
