Need tips on how to capture from tv with good quality and size

I have an ATI All in wonder graphic card and use ATI multimedia Centre to capture from TV.

When i capture i only get Huge files, and not too good quality.

Can anyone give some tips on how i should set the options to get a good rip?

what format and codec should i use and stuff like that...

Is there any other program i can use? (MMC sucks.. ugly colors and stuff)
