Need help - Resident Evil II

I recently bought Resident Evil 2. When I start the game I get an error : "Error. Open Driver" then the game starts but without sound. Here is the configuration of my computer :

Intel Pentium III - 733MHZ
192MB RAM
Nvidia Geforce MX 440
Creative Vibra 128
Windows 98 SE
Direct X 9.Oc

A few hours ago I formatted my computer and after installing windows, I tried the game again and it worked fine with sound and everything. But after I installed some programs like Windows media player, Video and audio codecs etc. it's started showing me the same error. Other games like Civilization III and Resident Evil 3 are working fine.

Here is the recommended configuration for the game :

Pentium 200 MHz, 133 MHz or higher with 3D accelerator card
8X CD ROM
32 Mb RAM
4 Mb DirectX 6 compatible 3D accelerator card
DirectX 6 compatible sound card
DirectInput 6 compatible joypad highly recommended
450 Mb free harddisk space for game data plus 100Mb for swap file
Indeo Video and Audio codecs
Windows 95/98

I have installed Indeo codecs but still can't seem to fix it. Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Also there is a file called Dxdiag.exe in the cd which is an older version. When I open it I get the following:

Make sure that you have the latest drivers for you soundcard. Also, make sure that you run the dxdiag program from the version installed on your harddisk and not the CD-ROM because that will be out of date. Just click START then RUN then type dxdiag and press enter. See what that comes up with. If it says the same thing after you have your sound drivers, perhaps try a different soundcard from another PC if you have access to one and see what that does. Am I right in thinking that the Vibra 128 is quite an old card? Actually, as you are running 98SE I wouldn't have thought that to be much of a problem.

On a side note, has anyone ever had any success running resident evil 1 on the PC?

Thats the problem with really old games, there is just no spport for them these days :(
That game is from the 3dfx/PowerVR/Matrox days isn't it ?

I think so. I know I've been trying to get RE1 to run on my PC for years and never succeeded. It's one of my fave games ever and I'm forced to dig out my PS everytime I wanna play it.

I have updated the sound card but still no luck but thanks for the help. I also checked the Dxdiag.exe in my computer, everything seems to be fine. Looks like I have to buy PS to play this game.

have you tried uninstalling the codecs, or any other program, that you installed after the game was working fine?

hey ray, have you tried booting into dos mode and running the game there?
I've not tried it in DOS actually, but I think it's more of a graphics card problem than an OS problem. I'll give it a go nonetheless, thanks for the suggestion.

I got the solution to this problem. I tried the game in another computer using windows Xp and it worked. Guess I have to install XP. I'll use win98 for internet,Movies and stuff and XP for playing Resident evil II. :)
