PSP 8 beta probably expires just to help encourage people to move on to the next beta or the final version when it's done... it's got nothing to do with getting you to pay for it. And if PSP 8 is going to be like PSP 7 for the "trial" then it'll be fully functional for 30 days... and I'm not sure what happens after that (like if you can't open it, or if you just can't use all the features of it) cause I haven't seen the nag screen for ages. I can use mine for as many days as I want.

I use Photoplus 5.5 from www.freeserifsoftware.com . The last time I looked at Gimp, it had alot of problems with windows. Worked ok with linux though.
