I have followed the beginners guide to setting up a home network and use a crossover cable to connect both pc's both network adapter are working fine, but it doesn't work, onew computer is a laptop running 98SE and one a pc with XP

on the laptop i just have the entire network icon in the network
on the pc there is nothing.

in the guide it said you may have to contact your service provider which is ntl in my case, if you have a cable modem, i do.

I can't use the default gateway address given in the guide because i lose my internet connection.

both workgroups are the same and the computer name are correct with no spaces

What do i need to do,

cheers, ALEX

Have you configured TCP/IP on both computers?
You could use the following:
LAN setting on XP 192.168.1.1 mask 255.255.255.0
NIC on 98 192.168.1.2 mask 255.255.255.0

Make sure NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled.

Do you have unique computer names on each PC.

You will not be able to access the web from the PC without the cable modem without enabling ICS on the PC that has it. If you do this, forget the IP settings above and set them for automatic.
