As quirky as American Splendor, Paul Giamatti proves once again that he is one of the premier actors out there today...
with an excellent supporting cast (including fine performances from Thomas Haden Church, Sandra Oh and Virginia Madsen) the story really gets down to the nitty gritty, exploring the personalities of the different characters and what drives them to the ends they get to with the common denominator being wine (of all things)
there is a lot of humour and large doses of poignancy in this movie... no over the top special effects, no gargantuan sets, no gimmicky script with surprise twists or anything of that sort... much like american splendor, each of the characters could basically walk right off the street and be in the movie, so believable are they and the situations they get into...
it belies belief that Giamatti did not get an Oscar nod for his performance... as good as di Caprio and Foxx were, Giamatti brings something completely different to the table and he does so without a buff body or splendiferous good looks...
a must see for anyone who enjoys a quirky but good natured movie with excellent performances all round...
4.5/5 OSNN stars...
