Merging partitions

I'm trying to merge partitions with PartitionMagic 8.0. These two partitions are on an old Seagate HD which is about 12GB in size. The partition I'm trying to merge is empty. Both partitions are NTFS. Seems like all is going well but somewhere near the end of the merging operation I get the following error:

Error #4
Bad argument/parameter

At PowerQuest site there's some help about this error but it doesn't seem to concern my situation. I've checked the disk and there are no errors.. any ideas how I could get the disk merged to one?

try deleting the empty partition, and just resizing the other one so that it uses the empty space.
