/edit - also, I'm clueless about this - is there any way to compile these so that they take over the system icons? somewhat like the system32.dll and whatnot, but I've never heard of individual icons being able to do that... /me hope that made sense

Yes you can
There are several aplications that can do it for you, but I like the manual way.
Get ResHack and replace the Icons you want in shell32.dll ... It might take a while locating them and changing them.

I'd advice you to look for some kind of tutorial as well, you might go insane if you check every Icon to see if thats what your looking for

IconPackager is good, it allows you to change just about all the icons, I got a set of the ones Benny posted together, but then IconPackager seemed to hiccup and I lost it, cant be arsed to do it again now
