Good morning,
I have converted from PC to MAC with a nice shiny macbook,
obviously the learning curve is pretty steep at first but I am getting there!

my only real issue is I have a NAS with a web administration page hosted on my local network.

I can connect to smb shares on my PC's but when I fire up safari and try and browse to http://nas I get the server cannot be found.

not really sure where to start on this one so would appreciate it if any MAC gurus could spare the time.

regards,
Daniel.

yup, http://ipaddress works just fine .... but not by name.

Additionally I have tried to ping by name from network utils and get unknown host.

The lan is connected via a wifi router issuing DHCP addresses

using linux/mac edit /etc/resolv.conf and add the line

192.168.1.1 (or what ever the nas ip is) nas

next time you type nas in a browser it should point to the nas server

thats all very cool and will work but is that not the same as a windows hosts entry and defeats the object of DHCP ??

regards,

Dan

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts - and the entry is the same

eg 127.0.0.1 localhost

DHCP is working as you say http://nas.local works so its assigned an ip,netmask, gateway and dns, you always need a host and domain, which nas.local is, host entry just lets you get around it by being specific.

This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.

Welcome to the Mac club. :) Lots of folks that really don't mind helping with Mac questions if it means 1 less Windows question. :p

ps - MAC is not the same as Mac ;)

The .local stuff is probably being resolved over Bonjour's version of DNS, whereas your nas stuff should be done by your router, but it is not. Mac OS X does not use Windows SMB to also attempt to resolve the IP for a given hostname.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
