Lost video thumbnails

On a fresh install of XP, if you open a folder up that has videos in it and choose thumbnail mode, you can see a thumbnail of the first frame of the video.
But at any time if you change the preferences in WMP, via "Tools" "Options", the thumbnails are replaced by the icon of WMP.

Does anyone know how to get the thumbnails back to the videos first frame ?

but there was nothing there that did what I want. As it turns out myself and VidPro have found a fix for it.
