Yes, I've already considered making the server remotely connect to each to check it's existence, but with a possible 50+ images viewable, and multiple users, it's a bit pointless.


Cache the information for 10 minutes in an SQL database. Only re-check if 10 minutes has passed. Add some sort of locking so that only one access to the script updates it, and there are no race issues involved.
 
I'm not going to go down the PHP/Scripted route.
 
You could add the onerror attribute to the img tag in the top of your document, effectively making it part of the document type :p
 
Extend the DTD. Just make sure it is set up properly so that Firefox does not screw up when viewing the page.
