Well it looks like in the US it might not be a permanent price drop after all. One of the top Sony guys in Europe explains the price drop as a way to clear out stock and once it's gone the only console in the US will be the 80 GB for 599, so this might not last at 499.

Could be a marketing trick to make Microsoft rethink their price drop or could be the truth...I don't think the employees of Sony talk to each other...might be a rule.
