The XP went to polymer (much cheaper to make, PCB processing instead of thick film hybrid process). The first athlons and earlier were ceramic.

Well i scrubbed it with cotton buds so hard that i nearly bust it by bending two pins

Anyway I have it working now so thanks for all your help the only weird thing is it now comes up as XP 1500+ when i set it to 2000+/2100 in the bios. If i set it to >2100 it works perfectly weird eh? maybe its on its way out?

just sounds like a fsb setting getting changed. for whatever reason, the 2000+/2100+ setting is setting a 100mhz fsb.

but glad everything's working fine now.
