formatting a primary partition

Anyone help? I want to format a primary partition before reinstalling XP. I have created a logical partition which holds all my data (of which there is a lot) which I would like to preserve. Is this possibe?

Yeah it's possible. Just start an installation from the cd, you'll get the option to delete and recreate the primary partition (format, etc.) from a clean installation. You can even launch your installation from xp... just go to the i386 folder and launch winnt32.exe. All of your data on the extended partition will be preserved... I've done it.

Brilliant. Thanks Lonman. I did boot up with the CD but didn't get far enough because I was too chicken! Thanks again.
