Welcome to the OSNN, Buzz Corps and HP Magic Giveaway!
OSNN has once again teamed up with the great people at Buzz Corps [ http://www.buzzcorps.com ] and HP [ http://www.hp.com ] as well as many other technology sites to give away some fantastic prizes over this holiday season worth over $6000.
I suggest you give this entire post a good read as to avoid any misunderstandings but feel free to ask any questions!
So what is up for grabs?
While we only had one prize in the 31 days of the dragon, this time we have many great prizes:
There are also fifty sites taking part in this competition and each site has been allowed to make up there own rules, so to increase your chances be sure to check out all the blogs listed on the link above!
So what do you have to do?
The theme of this competition is a giveaway in the spirit of the holidays and my idea for a competition stems around awarding others for making great posts.
The regular members and the more astute among you will have noticed that I have been fiddling with the reputation system for the last few days. This system is something that came with vBulletin 3.x several years ago and we have never really had a serious use for it... until now.
The site has two numbers to do with reputation: reputation and power. The first is your total amount of reputation recieved and power is the amount of reputation that you can give others.
Reputation power is increased by post count, join date and reputation as detailed here:
The last two are important for keeping things fair and will only allow a single person to give reputation 20 times a day while ensuring that 15 people must recieve reputation before the first can again from that particular person.
Of course existing long term members will have more reputation power but the competition is not about the amount of power you have but the reputation you obtain! Having high power in no way guarantees high reputation (I have clearly just spammed 17,000 posts for example)
How do you get reputation? By making great posts here on the forums. This can be funny posts, answering technical questions or posting anything interesting. What defines you recieving reputation is down to each member who will be giving it.
Sadly this doesn’t leave a winning path for getting an OSNN tattoo on your leg or at least not directly, although I suspect such a post would gain reputation for the novelty.
I also believe the best way of getting reputation is not begging for it so keep that in mind!
How do you give reputation? Simply click on the
to the left of each post and you can leave reputation (which is a total of your power at the time) as well as a little bit of feedback.
To enter the competition you obviously have to have agreed to the points made in this post, so to ensure you do I have created an additional step you must follow to say you want to be part of the competition.
You will need to access your user control panel here: http://forum.osnn.net/profile.php?do=editprofile
As shown in the screenshot, down at the bottom is an option to enter the competition and then all that will remain is to make some great posts and earn the respect and reputation of your fellow members.
Who can enter?
Any email-validated registered user is able to enter this competition other than myself, OSNN staff and my family! I have removed the need for first posts to be moderated to alleviate the expected influx of new members. Potentially you could sign up several times but each time you could technically be diluting your own chances of winning and of course I would soon clear up this foul play so I ask that you only use a single account!
Winners will be selected from the users with over 20 posts and the user with the highest reputation will be able to select a single prize from the list so in total there will seven winners with the following ten recieving an additional year of advert free OSNN.
Is there anything else?
Everyone’s reputation has been reset to zero (although original reputations have been backed up to be re-added once the competition is over) with everyone starting in the same position.
As mentioned before the reputation system can potentially be open to abuse and while I have done my utmost to ensure (and will both check the system during and after the competition) that it will remain fair, but I reserve the right to change things as I see fit as we go along.
Good luck, good posting, hello to any new members and I am looking forward to seeing the direction that the competition takes! If you have any questions feel free to post away.
The reputation system will be disabled once more at some point next Friday, the totals checked and a list of winners will either be contacted first or posted and then they can decide if they want their selected prize to be shipped to them or forwarded to a worthy cause.
Winners will need to have supplied a valid email address and then supply a valid name, phone number and address.
Please note that anyone that wins a physical prize in this competition will not be welcome to enter in any consecutive competition that OSNN might launch. Any winner of the prior competition is not eligable for a physical prize.
Any winner of a physical prize from sites also taking part in the 'HP MAGIC GIVEAWAY' competition are also not eligable to win a physical prize in this competition.
Scary important stuff partially stolen from Geekzone (sorry Mauricio!)
