on my dad's laptop (Dell) when he is watching a movie the drive will slow down and the sound of the movie wont match with the picture then it would recover then be fine? i thought maybe a low battery would be the problem but he watches the movie pluged in the outlet. could the memory have a reason this is happening because he was always meaning to upgrade but never had a reason to. thanks in advanced.

Could be the memory. Try disabling/shutting down as much as you can then run the dvd.
