Ok i know people have said that you cant direct cable connect XP and Win98 machines but whilst playing about somehow i got XP to connect to my laptop like it would the internet but thats all i could get just the connection nothing Else.

But anyhow i want to know if anyone knows a way round the direct cable connection problem as its the easiest solution for me at this time.

Oh and id prefer to use rs232 serial cable

On the 98 machine, install the "Direct Cable Connection" from the Add/Remove Components applet and setup the connection there using either com1 or com2, depending on which serial port your cable is plugged into.

On the XP machine, go to Network Connections and choose to add a connection. Choose advanced connection, connect directly to another computer, then again, choose com1 or com2, depending on which serial port your plugged into.

On both machines you should have to specify whether it will be the host or client machine in this connection as well. It should all be self explanatory. If you've got other problems, ask away.
