Cannot save files

I have this problem that I cannot save files using Firefox 3, I click on the link be it a .rar or .torrent and the save dialogue box comes up but in the area where it says "File Type" it is blank and if I press "save" the save box closes but nothing downloads / saves.

I reluctantly tried IE and that didn't work either

Any help would be greatfully appreciated
