I see what you're getting at Zedric. I'm not quite sure how it works. He has the same ISP as me but a different cable modem.
Although, there's definitely something weird going on because since I got cable I had the same IP address for months and then after fiddling around with cables one day my IP address changed. And now every time I reset my modem it changes IP.
I'm going to run some tests on my setup without the router when I get some free time so I'll post the results.
Maybe your "fiddling" kept the computer offline long enough to loose the DHCP lease? Or maybe your ISP just changed the lease time or stopped caring about your previous IP somewhere around the same time.
