I also uses Norton 2002 and once it's installed correctly it's fine; for finding viruses, viruses are now not the threat they were a few years ago. (Let's not mention what happens when you have to un-install it and re-install it again).
Intrusions into your machine via even slow internet connections using scripting languages like VB are now much more viable to hackers as they can't be detected with a virus footprint.
There are even commercial programmes that act in the same way as viruses did three years ago in order to pass information back to the host. Many (free) programmes that downloaded stuff (Music, porn, illegal software) ect, contained these elements that the company would sell on to other companies. Certain Governments do the same. This type of intrusion can't be detected or stopped as it's has passed into common use.
Even if you have a Firewall installed most are easly circumnavigated.
Generally speaking Norton will stop you from being infected with a "KNOWN" virus and some trojan horses, but it's a daily battle that you will in the end loose (if you are under attack). Anyway some modern viruses are benificial and perform tasks that help you, just because you have not heard of them does not mean they don't exist.
For most peoples use, Norton 2002 and ZONE LABS (not professional) port chaser will do just fine however if you are a terrorist or similar they won't help in the slightest.
The major dammage in recent years to the internet communities ability to communicate was not undertaken by viruses but by stupid programmers using Visual Basic and Internet Utilities readly available, that were (retrospectivly) trapped as bugs in the various enviroments they ran in (and not just Iternet Explorer).
The truth is that if I write a small programme now and can find a way of sending it to every Interner user when they next log-on, all computers in the word will become infected, no virus checker can possibly be of any use, no firewall will stop the transfer as it's already registered as secure.
This might sound impossible. It's not because just about all computers in the word use one of three operating systems.
If you wan't total secutiy use variable expressions of "one time pads", IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT "ONE-TIME-PADS" ARE you will never be able to secure any information or prevent others form obtaining it.
