A week after news spread that there was a new and prevalent piece of malware doing the rounds on Macintosh computers, Apple has now released an update to fix and remove it.

Summary
This Java security update removes the most common variants of the Flashback malware.

Products Affected
Java, Product Security, OS X Lion, Mac OS X v10.6

This Java security update removes the most common variants of the Flashback malware.

This update also configures the Java web plug-in to disable the automatic execution of Java applets. Users may re-enable automatic execution of Java applets using the Java Preferences application. If the Java web plug-in detects that no applets have been run for an extended period of time it will again disable Java applets.

Java for OS X Lion 2012-003 delivers Java SE 6 version 1.6.0_31 and supersedes all previous versions of Java for OS X Lion.

This update is recommended for all Mac users with Java installed.

Re: News: More Malware For Apple?

Man, I hope not. I like not having to use a antivirus or malware kit on my MAC.

as macs grow in popularity so will the number of viruses/trojans 🙂

Features dear boy, they are known as features  - but yes people have been saying that for a while, Although in Apple's defence they have always said that Mac's can't be harmed by a PC virus, a play on word's I know, all OS's can be infected, Windows/Linux/Unix

They need to remove Java from default install. 🙂 Also much of the trouble come from them making their own Java VM instead of leaving it up to Sun (now Oracle) to take care of. So many Java exploits ... not a headache I would think Apple would want. Probably to late now to try and get Oracle to support Mac version again. 🙁

For some strange reason, when I tried to install Photoshop CS5 on my Mac, it moaned at me that it needed java in order to run it, because of a few other application issues I have gone back to 10.6.8

Was this with lion?

Yes - with lion, seems silly to have to install Java just to use an Adobe product, did it with dreamweaver also

That is weird. I don't know why you would need java to use adobe creative suite.

well everytime i click on photoshop it tells me i need java, and after some digging on the adobe site this would seem why

FAQ | Adobe Creative Suite 5.5

Are there any known issues with Apple's recent changes to Java™ and Mac OS X Lion?

Many Adobe applications are dependent on the Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for some features to work. Apple recently changed the way it includes Java in Mac OS, and with Lion, Java is no longer preinstalled; it is now an optional install that the user must select.

Since current Adobe installers and applications were built before these changes by Apple, our software anticipates that Java is installed. Adobe and Apple have worked together to ensure that you can install Java at OS install time, or optionally at a later time before you install Adobe applications

Lets hope CS6 doesn't require this

Yeah, I would like for java to completely go away. I never did like it.
