128k mp3 should be good enough quality for general listening, and will let you to get a good amount/lenght of music on your player

I tend to keep a .wav (~60mb per 6minute file) file of things i record for personal use and .mp3's for things i intend to share (~6mb per 6 minute file)

dBpoweramp might do the trick i use it to conver formats (ex realaudio > mp3) there is a plug in for recording from aux input to mp3.

i have some 300 12" vinyl dance records i want to rip and going to use it just havent had time yet
