Microsoft delays Automatic Update rollout of XP SP2

Microsoft has decided to suspend the rollout of Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) via Automatic Updates in order to provide its corporate customers with more time to install an SP2 download blocking mechanism that the company provided last week. For this reason, XP Home users will start receiving XP SP2 via Automatic Updates starting on Thursday, August 18, while XP Professional users will start receiving the update via Automatic Updates on Thursday, August 25. Under the original schedule, both sets of users would have started receiving the update today.

Did anyone notice that Aug 18 is a wensday and not a thursday?

Ok, it is 1:44pm CST, and where is my SP2?!! I am all set!
HDD defrag - Check
Full system backup - Check
Auto DL/Update Notification - Check

But where is my SP2????????????

/parody

HDD Defrag - 22 mins
Full System Backup - 38 mins
Reviewing applications that might have a problem with SP2 - 3hrs
Waiting anxiously to DL for an update that will crash you system -

Priceless!!

Does anybody use a Canon Multipass C5500 with XP Sp2? it worked fine then I installed XPSP2 and it will not work the "server" part never starts.

No I dont use that Canon but maybe they have something on their site ( drivers ) or a patch ?

Grrrrrrrrr, now damnit, they said Aug 18th. It is 11:30pm and still no SP2. WTH!

Why not take the network install if ya want it that bad its the same thing, unless your on dialup that is?

I have every confidence that SP2 final will be as good as the earlier version of SP2 that you can currently get through the v5. windows update site, and its not often I use the word "confident" and "Microsoft" in the same scentence :)

I was using v4!

Don't want to sound a dummy but when did it change to V5, is there a difference and why didn't anyone tell me :( ???????

hey i need some support....i have sp2 but still it doesnt upgrade to windows update v5, stays v4, and if i change it to v5 i get an error and i have to use hijack this to delete the web file? and download windows update again...also my Norton SW 2003 pro condition is still unknown, ive read that there is a fix but i ran live update and it remains unknown... any help?

For Nortons after I did liveupdate all was fine as for v4 to v5 unsure will look at some stuff and see what I can find.

Well apparently Microsoft is full of BS, on the auto update SP2 release. It is now the 20th and still no sign of SP2. So to hell with them, I am DL'ing the bloated network version.

I always used to replace the default Windows notepad.exe with a different 3rd party one. I simply replaced the 3 copies of notepad.exe that are in C:\Windows\ , C:\Windows\System32\ and C:\Windows\System32\Dllcache\ with the new one, but after installing Service Pack 2, the original Windows notepad.exe overrides my new one. How can I get the new one to stick?

I believe they're spreading it over several days to prevent the servers from getting overloaded. You should have downloaded the whole thing a long time ago =P

Yea I sure should have NetRyder, it only took about 6 min to download and another 15 or so to install. No problems so far. Still trying to get used to all the new security features, but yea.

Ok, I admit it, I was holding out to see if there was a major disaster first. This was M$'s big security upgrade, first thought, ok this is M$ were talking about here, knowing them after SP2 installs my PC will only connect to a M$ porn site. LOL

I have noticed since installing SP2 that my processor usage is a bit strange. Like if you goto a web document or any long page, and scroll down, my processor usage goes from idle (1% - 7%) to nearly 50%! It never did that before. Can anyone confirm that there system does the same?

I see mine does something like that also if I scroll inside a web page but I cant say that is not normal because I never checked to see if it did it before.

I am gonna check my other machine its not updated yet to sp2

Windows Firewall problem

Whenever I restart my computer, my Windows Firewall automatically turns itself off. I go into the security options, re-enable it; and then next restart....it's off again.

I think this is the right thread for this (hope so!).... wasn't sure if a new one was warranted.

Has anyone here taken the option to receive SP2 by auto-update? There surely must be someone on dial up or something? And if so have you received it?

I am on broadband, but hate to be wasteful of bandwidth if I can help it and so tried opting for the auto update a couple of days ago on two of my machines (the ones with XP home, because Pro is not on offer yet) and so far seems like nothing is coming through, even though I have left them powered on and am always online behind a router....

Fact is I am not feeling a hurry so I can wait, just wanted to know if it will ever come my way this method and if it will in any way vary from the "full" SP2 download, in which case maybe I need to take that. Oh, and if I do does it simply apply over the top of an installation, or is it a reformat type install? (sorry to sound/be dumb on that one!)

Yes it can be installed over the top as you say. But some people are going to say the only way is too format clean install, others will say you need to slipstream. Me I am gonna say its all the same in the end I would think. I have SP2 and have no real troubles at all. Me it was over the top install. But I will of course slipstream it when the time comes to reinstall.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
