need immediate help

got the stuff back, same old story heh.

im bringin it to a friend's sometime next week and we're going to sit down, break out the tools and spare parts and try to figure out what the hell is up.

finally got it figured out for ya...........

it's possessed! Take it to the nearest computer exorcism specialist

well, i borrowed a known working psu from a friend and tried it. same old story. i get power up on fans/harddrives etc.. but nothing on screen, then it automatically shuts down.

perhaps i am missing something basic here.. i have never installed motherboards until this so walk me through the basics, my jumper settings may be off, or lcd leads.. who knows, but i have tested every freakin part and nothing is helping.

1. Try your CPU in someone else's motherboard.

2. Try a different power supply on your motherboard.

It sucks that your first experience was so bad but look on the bright side, it can only get easier the next time around!!

Hi Cam,

Right, from the beginning then. If any of this seems obvious or me sounding patronising I apologise, but you asked for the basics. :D

Clear out the old motherboard. Ensure there are no old screws or cables rattling around !!!

Make sure the standoffs in the case match the holes in your motherboard and there are no extras !! If you have holes in the board but nowhere to put a metal screw in standoff use a plastic one that just sits there.

Take your new motherboard out the box and sit it on a table with the pink foam under it.

Ensure that the jumpers are set to jumperfree mode ( chapter 3, right at the beginning) In paticular make sure the one marked JEN is in the right place.

Insert the memory and cpu. Using a little heat sink paste, put the processor fan on. Plug the power plug for the fan into the motherboard (generaly marked fan 1).

Place the board into the case ( DISCARD THE FOAM ) and ensure it matches the stand offs. Make sure theres no leftovers !!. Screw the board gently into posistion. Connect the switches and lights, be careful here, one in the wrong place could stop you booting. If in doubt just do the power switch.

Add a graphics card. Ensure it fully goes in to slot, especially AGP which can lift out at the slightest provocation.

Connect the power plug. Make sure it snaps in

Check your work, especially jumpers :D

One last check !!

Push the button :)

Cam, just found what I was looking for, on page 59 of your manual theres a picture shwing how to reset your bios. Just make sure there not a jumper accross this. :D

Hope Bytes suggestions help, I hope that all goes well. We are all thinking of you and your (soon to be fully working) pc.

Good luck

well gents, no dice as of yet. heres what i did:

i followed bytes' instructions and found the following:

it was already set to jumper free mode
the agp card was firm in place
i removed all the leads except POWER SW

so i tried to boot.

i get nothing on screen, boot process sounds like proc/fan and harddrives and cdroms initializing, then it idles like that until i turn it off.

so i reset the bios, it said to short the solder points, which i was unsure of, so i just poked the "solder points" with a screwdriver and popped out the battery for 2 minutes. replaced the battery

tried to boot

this time it boots for a short amount of time, then shuts off on its own. nothing on screen.

tried a pci video card that im 90% sure is in working order. didnt work.

back to the drawing board.

Cam, excuse me for being dense, how do you know it's booting for a short time if you you dont get a display ?

Cam, this sounds like a typical overheating problem, are you sure your fan is on properly ?

Also if the frequencies and or volatge are incorrect then it will shut down.

You said you went down to just the power switch, could you connect the speaker and let us know if you get any beeps or such.

Another thing you try is deliberately under clock the chip, to say, 800mhz and see if it boots then

Hi Cam

Just finished reading your entire tale of woe.

Had the same problem with a 1.2 Athlon, replaced chip uner waranty, bought new motherboard, pulled out lots of hair, theatened to throw the thing in the canal. After 6 weeks dicovered monitor had failed due to power surge at the same time Athlon died. Started with little green light then turned orange i.e standby mode....

Just a thought

i have tried it on 3 different monitors, all of which i know to be in working order. good try tho ;)

I still think it could be the power supply...

but...

1. you need to try the motherboard with a processor that you know works and

2. you need to try that processor in another motherboard,

that is the only way to know for sure what it is.

Hey Cam.....since you started this saga I havent been able to eat, sleep, or go to the bathroom.....(imagine that for a minute...lol)

I am sure I am not the only one who anxiously awaits your next updated post.

Please have pity and keep us in mind and update us so we can continue to live again.....:D :D :D

This thread will never die. It was started March 3rd and is titled "Need immediate help". Hehe, go figure. ;)

to be honest, i am so apathetic about this situation now. the tower is sitting under my desk untouched. i will get around to it in another day or two, its just pretty hard to care when everytime you try something nothing works =p

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
