Are there any PCI cards next to it on the board. If so try moving your PCI card to another slot further away to allow additional air cooling.
Have you had this problem right from the start or has it ever been OK.
Another thing to check , run DXdiag and see if AGP Texture Acceleration is enabled in your display section. If it isnt that causes problems. Let me know if it is faded out and cant be enabled and I will tell you how to get it enabled and that may solve the problem
The reason why I mentioned the 40.72 drivers is because my problem only happened after SP1 was installed.
I originally had the same card as you up until a couple of months ago and only had the problem with one set of drivers and rolling back solved the problem.
Since installing SP1 the problem occurred no matter what drivers were installed with the exception of 40.72 with the fix
